Hi! My name is Marlies Kort and I made a discovery most runners will never know- about how to train and prepare for your best marathon.

I am a mother of two, I run a coaching business called ‘Free & Focused Ltd' together with Sebastian, my husband. I was born and raised in The Netherlands, but today we live on the tropical island of Curacao which is part of The Royal Dutch Kingdom.

In 2015 I became World Champion Ironman 70.3 in the Female F40-44 class.

I also won the NY Marathon in 2013 as non-pro female overall in 2h52. My personal marathon best is 2h47 (Berlin). I am the F40-44 winner of Ironman 70.3 Miami (2014), Puerto Rico (2015), Panamá (2016), Cartagena (2016), Aruba (2016) and Boulder USA (2017), from where I'm writing this letter to you now.

So why am I telling you all this?

... It is certainly not to brag or something.

What I am sharing in The 9-Mile Marathon training program about running and training for a marathon (full or half) has put my world (and those of hundreds of other runners) upside down.

Back in The Netherlands, Amsterdam Marathon 2016
When Sebastian and I were on a holiday to The Netherlands in 2016 I discovered a radical new vision to train for marathons. 

The vision was formed by a Dutch medical researcher from Amsterdam; she had a completely different approach to running and training.

Her claim was that during the marathon training period you should never run more than 14k (9 miles) runs.

This shocked me!

You have to know -- before I heard about this idea, this philosophy, I used to train the old way, the hard way -- meaning: long 18+ mile training runs, week in - week out…

And as much as I had success with this approach, I also had plenty of injuries and running friends who, more often than not, experienced different problems when training for a marathon and frequently had to give up, never showing up at the starting line. 

Sounds familiar?

Anyway, this medical researcher told me about this totally new idea - that it was proven, tested…

Her new insights came from ground-braking research on chronic fatigue syndrome CFS and new innovative ways how to cure.

Being a marathon runner, she then  translated her findings to running and marathon training in particular.

I read her articles about many other Dutch runners who were using this method already for more than a year. At the Amsterdam marathon, and at the Rotterdam marathon with more than 40.000 participants. In the meantime  Dutch Runner's World already published about it in their summer issue. 
Results where BEYOND interesting..
It's a risky world out there.
From that moment I only wanted to do one thing; to further develop and tune this system and to share it with the running society. To make it known to everybody who wants to run a marathon in a healthy and responsible way. 

But it's a risky world out there, with many antique beliefs about training, running and suffer. 
So I was skeptical too..
After many try outs, I found it.
But at the same time I was intrigued and had a lot of questions. 

Because we all have seen running friends giving up because of injuries, and/or hormonal- and mental problems  

So this way of training made me thinking. Was this really something we could use when training and preparing for marathon?

The main question was: can it be done? Can you prepare and run a marathon with only a few 9-mile max training runs?

I could'nt let go of that question. 

I just had to figure out if this method could work for me, and more important if this would work for my students as well.

So with the many many years of running and racing experience I went to work with the goal of translating this philosophy into a workable, teachable and understandable SYSTEM.

It wasn’t perfect in the beginning, I have to admit.

But after many try outs, I found it.

At this point I can honestly say there is an alternative system now to train for your marathon. It is a system that is proven to work for me, my students, a system that has proven to work for many hundreds of other runners and I have every reason to believe it will also work for you.

The name of the system is:

“The 9-Mile Marathon Training System”.

The reason why it’s called “9-Mile Marathon Training System” is because it is a system of 90-days, with no more than 3-4 runs each week with the longest run being a 9-miler.

When I first heard about this - I thought it was crazy indeed… I was convinced you had to put in the hefty hours and miles when training for a marathon.

But “boy oh boy” -- I couldn’t have been more wrong holding on to this old way of thinking.

So I Decided To Test It Out Myself
I not only did a heavy test myself (not to be duplicated); I trained two of my running students and I followed Dutch runners adopting different variations of the new training concept.

To test the new system I did a 3 week challenge after training for 2 months myself "the 9-miler way":

I ran 2 Half Marathons in the first weekend; one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. 
The following weekend I did the 2016 KLM marathon on Curacao (under extremely hot and humid circumstances) and the weekend thereafter I completed the Cartagena IronMan 70.3 

Apart from winning all of them, it was the Accumulated Fatigue Avoidance AFA which made it possible to participate in all these events in such a short time. 
Because of AFA the recovery times in between the races were short, which made it possible for me to 
A) quickly perform again and 
B) perform at a high level and 
C) do it all in a healthy, socially acceptable way 
Then I knew I had found something amazing
At the same time I started working with a two students in my running group, Rob and Tessa. Here are their stories.

Can you imagine if that happened to you?

After this the educational and teaching system started to develop. 

I got lots of resistance from the 'classic' coaches. They even told me to stop! Many old school coaches tried to make clear to me this system couldn't work.
At the same time, I was spreading the news, trained many local runners, and more and more "age-group" runners, both in The Netherlands and in my running groups completed their marathons in a way they never did before. 

Rob did another marathon and even improved his time with 9 minutes (3h31 this time), and Sebastian, my husband, ran his FIRST marathon the new way. 59 years old, a 70.3 age-group triathlete who never ran a full marathon before. He trained 90 days "the 9-miler way" from January - March 2017 and finished his first ever marathon (Rotterdam) in 4h07. Which -by the way- was only 3 minutes slower than the finish time the system predicted at the beginning of his 90-day training. 

And, most important, he felt strong and healthy all the way to the finish line. Of course he was very tired, but nothing more than that. One week later he ran a very good 10k.
